Some people have given them the nickname of “gross wagon,” due to their appalling appearance. The BMW X7 is the latest to join this grouping. It’s an immense vehicle, and some say the grill in the front of the automobile looks like the one on the mask of Hannibal Lecter. While that statement may be a bit harsh, it’s not far from the truth.

Another vehicle that’s receiving a great deal of criticism is the Audi Q7. One test driver said she felt like the car was Godzilla taking over the roads. With the lights giving it the appearance of a big-eyed monster, the vehicle is stretched and stuffed with all sorts of extras. What about the BMW X6? Some say it’s the most shocking of all SUVs. Despite the looks, this SUV has useless dynamics. The ground clearance is subpar, and the massive engine lags when taking the automobile off-road. Another problem is this gigantic vehicle is a gas guzzler.

For those that thought BMW was the leader in luxury automobiles, consider the X5. This SUV is a tad more aesthetically pleasing, even if they do appear to become more unattractive as they continuously make updates. The initial X5 was meticulously proportioned, and now is a bit dainty. Likewise, all huge Benz SUVs appear dreadful, separated only from the decent G-Class.

You can’t mention big and unsightly SUVs and not discuss the Bentley Bentayga. Some say this car is nothing more than a design tragedy. If you want to drive around something that looks like an updated London taxi, then opt for the Rolls-Royce Cullinan. While it does have friendlier features and excellent color selections, buying a cab would be cheaper. Another grotesque SUV is the Porsche Cayennes. Thankfully, as they upgrade this SUV, they are making changes that make it more visually appealing.

There has been much debate about why these vehicles are taking on such a gangling appearance. The Range Rover’s vehicle designer was put on the hot seat when he was asked why these bigger SUVs are so ugly. Gerry McGovern replied that it’s more challenging to dress a larger person than a small one, and he stated the same concept applies to vehicles.

Some people wonder if the Germans can design an appropriate luxury SUV. Since they are practical people who tend to be a bit frugal, do they really have the ability to create something for luxury driving? They try to add a little of the Downton Abbey grandeur to their vehicles, but it always seems to be a flop. One thing you can’t take away from the SUVs listed is their performance. While they may be downright weird looking, they are great to drive and some of the most excellent engineered products on the market.

Americans are obsessed with the XL SUVs. However, in England, it seems as if people are watching a remake of Moby Dick as he makes his way down the Grand Union Canal. Frankly, some of these cars look intimidating like a Doberman Pinscher. They are bullies on the roadways and seem to push everyone else out of the way. They may have a home in America, but they are not loved around the world, especially where space is a premium. Can you imagine one of these monsters driving through the streets of China?

Have you ever noticed that some of these big SUVs that are being produced are downright ugly?
